SNS: your health service number
Número de Utente. Your National Health Service user number.
What it is
The SNS user number gives you access to Portugal's public health services: health centres, a family doctor and hospitals.
Available as Standard or Express.
Who can get one
Access is based on legal residence, not nationality. The number is issued by the local health centre (Centro de Saúde) for your registered address in Portugal, so a real residential address is required. Hotels and temporary addresses are usually not accepted.

Questions about the SNS number
Can I get NISS and SNS before I move?
NISS requests generally need a Portuguese address. SNS access is based on legal residence, and the number is issued by the local health centre for your registered address, so a real residential address is required. Hotels and temporary addresses are usually not accepted. That is why we suggest the NIF first, then NISS and SNS once you have arrived and secured an address.
