NIFBOLT

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in Portugal to get a NIF?

No. If you live outside the EU/EEA and are not resident in Portugal, you must appoint a fiscal representative resident in Portugal to obtain a NIF. Our partner lawyer acts as that representative, so you can start from where you live now.

What is a fiscal representative and when can I stop using one?

A fiscal representative is someone resident in Portugal whom people living outside the EU/EEA and not resident in Portugal must appoint to obtain a NIF. When you later become resident in Portugal, you update your address at the tax office (Finanças). After that, a fiscal representative is no longer required.

Can I get NISS and SNS before I move?

NISS requests generally need a Portuguese address. SNS access is based on legal residence, and the number is issued by the local health centre for your registered address, so a real residential address is required. Hotels and temporary addresses are usually not accepted. That is why we suggest the NIF first, then NISS and SNS once you have arrived and secured an address.

What documents do I need?

It depends on the service. Each service page lists its documents.
